The Getty Center - Los Angeles, California
This iconic building complex, located on 55 acres of landscaped hillside has become a Los Angeles landmark since its construction in
the mid 1990's. Sweeney & Associates, Inc. provided the irrigation design services to the five landscape architecture firms who worked
on this amazing project including Emmet L. Wemple & Associates; OLIN; Fong, Hart Schneider & Partners; Spurlock Poirier Landscape
Architects; and Denis Kurtz Associates.
The irrigation design of the site package included over head rotor systems for the steep slopes of the projects, while the main complex
landscape was over 90% drip irrigated. Innovative features include using the water from the one million gallon fire suppression tank to
supply water for the slope irrigation. This allowed the water in the storage tank to be constantly refreshed to prevent stagnation of the
water supply. The irrigation system also featured the use of a sophisticated central control system that is used for the Getty Center as
well as the original Getty Museum located in Malibu. All control valves for the main complex are located in mechanical rooms below the
landscaped areas to eliminate the need for control valve boxes in the precious planting spaces.
Sweeney & Associates, Inc. is proud to have continued its long association with the Getty through its work on the Getty Villa museum
renovation in Malibu, the addition of the Stark Sculpture Garden at the Getty Center, the landscape changes to the Lower Central
Garden, and most recently, changes to the arrival area and parking structure landscape.
